In addition to regular gym classes, let children move for half an hour twice a day: the Dutch Sports Council, the Education Council and the Council for Public Health and Society advise schools in our country.
Advice to schools: Let children move hours per day extra
The advice published by the government’s three major advisory bodies on Monday states that children can do exercises during classes to promote learning performance for math and language.
‘Children just stare at their mobile’
“This is of national importance. Childrens just stare at their mobile during the break, become clunky and do not have the right motor skills. Schools can improve that, “says Michael van Prang, chairman of the Dutch Sports Council, in the AD.
Exercising during the lesson would have a positive influence on brain activity and cognitive educational performance, for example in the area of language and arithmetic. The breaks are well suited to extra movement, reports health tips
Children should move for at least one hour a day according to current standards. In addition, they should do special exercises to strengthen the muscles and bones.
The advisory councils believe that schools should focus more on this, because childrens spend most of the day in the classroom. This applies to both primary education and secondary schools and MBO.
Municipalities could also do more according to the councils, for example by appointing neighborhood coaches
